Jose Luis Castillo will finally get a chance to present his side of the story with respect to not being able to make weight for his June 3 trilogy meeting with Diego Corrales. According to boxing scribe Dan Rafael of ESPN, Castillo faces a disciplinary hearing on August 24 in Reno, before the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Castillo must explain why he weighed 139½ pounds at the official weigh-in, 4½ pounds more than the lightweight limit and the agreed upon weight in the contract. As a result the bout was cancelled, causing enormous financial losses for promoters Gary Shaw and Bob Arum, Showtime Television, Diego Corrales, the casinos, and Castillo himself.

Executive director Keith Kizer noted that Castillo will receive a fair hearing, but the board will also take his past history into account, including his inability to make weight for his second meeting with Corrales. Castillo faces a possible one-year suspension, and a fine as high as $250,000.

"He'll come there to explain -- if he can -- why he didn't make weight and why he didn't tell anyone he couldn't make the weight," Kizer said. "He will have a full and fair opportunity to explain himself and the commission will then vote on what to do."
