According to Lou DiBella, promoter for Sergiy Derevyanchenko, there is every reason to believe that Gennadiy Golovkin should have won at least one bout in his two fight series with Canelo Alvarez.
Golovkin fought Canelo to a controversial twelve round split draw in 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and then a year later in the same venue, Canelo won a close majority decision to win the WBA, WBC middleweight titles.
Golovkin is scheduled to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko on October 5, for the vacant IBF middleweight title, at the Hulu Theater in New York's Madison Square Garden.
Golovkin believes that he was robbed in both bouts with Canelo.
DiBella sees nothing wrong with Golovkin's belief that he won both bouts.
"Canelo is one of the best fighters in the world. But anybody who knows anything about boxing knows that, at worst, when Canelo and GGG met it was 1-1," said DiBella to Sky Sports. "GGG has every reason to believe it was 2-0."
This fight has came around full circle, because in 2018 Golovkin was stripped of the IBF middleweight title for not fighting Derevyanchenko when he was the mandatory challenger.
The sanctioning body removed him of the title, because he opted to move forward with the rematch against Canelo. Then Daniel Jacobs won the vacant belt with a split decision over Derevyancehnko. And then Canelo won the title after winning a decision over Jacobs. The IBF stripped Canelo for not facing Derevyanchenko.
"GGG opted not to fight Derevyanchenko at that time because the second Canelo was looming," explained GGG Promotions representative Tom Loeffler.
"People said: 'GGG thinks it's too dangerous, he doesn't want to fight Derevyanchenko, he is afraid'. I can tell you that GGG hasn't ducked anyone. GGG hasn't lost a fight in the ring - he might have lost on the scorecards, by one point in the last round."
