Jaws dropped and incredulous looks were spread across just about everyone’s face when the news initially broke.

Since announcing that he signed a three-fight agreement with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, it appeared as though Jermall Charlo would get the first crack at Canelo Alvarez.

Hours of film study, along with ambiguous predictions, soon flooded the internet. Ultimately, Alvarez sat back on his throne and delivered a bombshell. Instead of taking on Jermall, the pound-for-pound star revealed that he would officially be facing Jermell Charlo, Jermall's twin brother.

The smaller Charlo currently holds every single major title at 154 pounds. Although Alvarez has also pilfered every trinket in the super middleweight division, there was speculation that Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) would be willing to level the playing field by offering Charlo a catchweight instead of having him compete at the full super middleweight limit.

No such thing was done, however, as Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) has agreed to fight Alvarez at 168 pounds. That said, just because team Charlo didn't insist on a catchweight, that doesn’t mean that Charlo will tip the scales at 168.

Derrick James, Charlo’s award-winning trainer, is in charge of both his training regimen and weight gain. All signs point to Alvarez having a bit of a size advantage. That sentiment, nevertheless, is quite alright with James. Ideally, James would much rather his fighter come in well under the super middleweight limit.

“I don’t believe in getting that heavy,” James told Fight Hub TV. “I’ll say 63 or 64.”

Bulking up and adding a bit of muscle is somewhat needed if Charlo’s chin is to hold up to Alvarez’s normally deleterious power. With that said, the pros of adding size don’t tally enough when juxtaposed with the cons.

At some point, James knows good and well that Charlo will have to stand and bang. But, when the Houston native isn't planting his feet in the middle of the ring trying to get his respect, James is convinced that coming in a bit lighter will help Charlo in the long run.

“I want him to be fast, I want him to be athletic, I want him to be mobile. The heavier you are it’s like you’ll be lethargic, slower. You have to be faster.”
