WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34KOs) is not exactly sure how young up and comer Anthony Joshua (14-0, 14KOs) secured a number two ranking in the WBC's top ten.
Joshua could very well become the mandatory challenger to Wilder's title by next year. Next Saturday night in London, the Olympic gold medal winner will face his amateur rival Dillian Whyte (16-0, 13KOs).
There was a time when people questioned how Wilder became the mandatory challenger to champion Bermane Stiverne, who Wilder decisioned in January to capture the title.
Wilder had 32 fights when he reached his shot against Stiverne. Joshua appears to be getting to the belt in half the time.
"Out of the 14 fights he got....if you look at the rankings, Joshua is ranked at number two for some reason. I don’t really feel that he proved himself to get to that high rank. It’s like, who has he really fought that was ranked to get to that point. But, you know there are many ways to get ranked. Its just the politics of boxing, how to work the business of boxing as I say," Wilder said to BoxingScene.com.
“Everybody want their guy, if they got the goods, to get to the top real fast. I don’t need to go more into that, it is what it is and soon he will be a mandatory of mine and I’m looking forward to that."
