Olympic gold medal winner and middleweight contender James DeGale says WBA junior welterweight Amir Khan should have shown more loyalty to British promoter Frank Warren. Like DeGale, Khan signed with Warren right after the Olympics, where Amir won silver. Khan had been with Warren for his entire pro career. His contract recently expired and he decided to jump with Golden Boy Promotions.
A lot the fans and media and DeGale have pointed out how Warren was very loyal to Khan after he was knocked silly in a minute of the first round by Colombia's Breidis Prescott in September 2008. Warren rebuilt Khan from the ground up and made him credible again. DeGale doesn't think it was the right move. A few in the British press think Khan may have went to Golden Boy to get his hands on an all-Brit Ricky Hatton super-fight. Hatton is signed to Golden Boy and announced his comeback a few weeks ago.
"Maybe he could have shown more loyalty after what Frank did for him after he was knocked out. People were really down on him then but he has got to do what he has got to do. Things were really bad for him when he was knocked out but he has comeback really well, is strong-headed and has a really big heart," DeGale said.
"Personally I do not think it was the right decision. His fan base in big over here. He is a great fighter and in trying to further his career he thought he should go to Vegas, get out of England, and have the big shows. But if he stayed over here I think Frank would have brought in the big fights. Frank would have delivered."
