Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is advising WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) to focus on the jab when he faces Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. De La Hoya faced Mayweather in 2007 and had a lot of success when he used his jab. In the second half of the fight he stopped using his jab and Mayweather took over, winning a twelve round split decision.
"For Canelo the jab is the key, that's the key to open any door. That is the secret weapon to defeat Mayweather Jr. That's the weapon that he did not know how to defend against. Canelo has keep up with the jab, use his intelligence and have a good game plan," said De La Hoya.
De La Hoya's fight with Mayweather generated 2.5 million purchases. He hopes Mayweather-Canelo will break the record.
"As you know, the record for pay-per-view sales is 2.5 million purchases and I hope this time the record is broken. There is a good chance that it will break that record. We as a company are ambitious. We know and recognize what we have in hand. This will be an event that will be seen in 200 countries around the world," De La Hoya said.
