According to The Los Angeles Times, recent reports of a May 3 clash between Oscar De La Hoya (38-5, 30KOs) and Steve Forbes (33-5, 9KOs), being a done deal, are premature. The fight is currently in the final stages of negotiations and a deal with the Home Depot Center in California is being finalized to stage the event.
The fight, being promoted as as De La Hoya tuneup on route to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September, will be televised on regular HBO, and not pay-per-view.
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, told the paper that any report stating the fight is a done deal is premature.
"Ask him if he has a signed contract. He doesn't," Schaefer said.
An HBO official, who was not named by the paper, appears confident of the fight coming together without any problems.
"It'd be amazing if any element of the agreement fell apart at this point."
