Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) will return to action on May 7th and then September 17th.
Canelo, who is still only 25-years-old, picked up the biggest victory of his pro career on Saturday night with a dominating twelve round unanimous decision victory over former four division world champion Miguel Cotto.
The only blemish on his record came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) in September of 2013.
That fight generated an explosive 2.2 million pay-per-view buys, which ranks as the third largest buyrate figure in PPV history - only bested by Mayweather's fights with Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.
De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, would love to see his fighter secure the opportunity to get revenge.
He believes Canelo was too inexperienced and not ready for a fighter like Mayweather in 2013. The Golden Boy President is very confident of Canelo's chances in a rematch.
Mayweather retired in September. While he is expected to return in 2016, it's doubtful he would face Canelo at 155-pounds or even 154. He fought Canelo at a catch-weight of 152. Canelo's last four fights have taken place at 155.
"Well, we would be open to it - absolutely. I'm sure Canelo would love to he opportunity. Like I said right now, Canello is the man right now," De La Hoya said.
"That's why I said we're fighting him in May and then fighting him in September - whether it's in Las Vegas or anywhere around the world, he is fighting in May and September. And you know, if Mayweather wants to fight him - we can discuss that in the future."
