Staples Center, Los Angeles - Chad Dawson (31-1, 18KOs) slammed Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32KOs) in the aftermath of their fight. Dawson stopped Hopkins in the second round to capture the WBC light heavyweight title. As previously reported, the outcome was very freakish and controversial.
During the second, Dawson lifted Hopkins when they were clinched on the inside. Hopkins charged in and was hovering over Dawson and leaned on his back. Dawson pushed him off in a tackle-like format, Hopkins went down hard near the ropes. He told the referee that he hurt his left shoulder and couldn't continue. The referee ruled it as a technical knockout because there wasn't a foul and Hopkins couldn't continue the fight.
“Bernard Hopkins disappointed a lot of fans. I was looking forward to a great fight. I was looking forward to going out there and performing. He cut my night short. He was faking. You know he was faking. He kept saying ‘I’m a gangsta, I’m a gangsta.’ He ain’t no gangsta. A gangsta would have got up and fought like a man. Bernard can’t touch me. I was getting closer to him and he knew that. Where did he hurt his shoulder? He landed on his back,” Dawson said.
