All of the big fights David Benavidez has asked for are finally becoming a reality.
Earlier this year, the current WBC super middleweight interim champ got his hands on Caleb Plant. In the first six rounds, it was all about movement for the former titlist, something Benavidez struggled with. However, once he found his rhythm, Plant eventually folded. Now, in just a few short hours, the trend of fighting elite-level competition will continue.
Later on tonight in Las Vegas, Demetrius Andrade will step up to the plate. On paper, their contracting styles are about as 50/50 as you can get.
For Andrade, it’s all about winning. His career, by and large, has been about everyone else. Jermall Charlo, Canelo Alvarez, Jaime Munguia, and every other elite name you can think of has looked the other way. The former Olympian knows it’s now or never as his time in the spotlight winds down. Benavidez, on the other hand, has a different level of motivation.
With the WBC secondary tag in one hand and blood-stained gloves in the other, Benavidez is all about proving himself. That, of course, may come off as disingenuous. The manner in which he fights and the praise he receives outside the ring, all point to a fighter that’s earned the respect of those in the boxing world.
However, while the adulation is appreciated, Benavidez has one goal in mind…fight Canelo Alvarez.
The pound-for-pound stars abilities and undisputed status have him tabbed as the best fighter in the super middleweight division and one of the best scrappers around. According to the 33-year-old, after his recent one-sided win over Jermell Charlo, no one in or around his weight class can match up with him.
Until the day he retires, Alvarez will have to back up his braggadocious words with action. Outside of the fame that comes along with beating Alvarez, the gargantuan paychecks can be life-changing. For Benavidez, he would love to deposit several millions into his account. He also believes that Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO titles would look great on his mantle.
The money and the titles would be appreciated but they're all secondary. In the mind of Benavidez, it’s all about proving to everyone, including Alvarez, that he’s the baddest man on the planet.
“I want to fight Canelo because I want him to know I’m better than him,” revealed Benavidez to a group of reporters recently. “I want him to know.”
