Heavyweight Danny Williams was on the verge of retirement when he faced British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer in Neath. Coming off a three-round knockout loss to Audley Harrison in December, Williams was viewed by many as a shot fighter and nothing but a stepping stone for Gammer.

Unlike his UK rival Audley, who was knocked out in his following bout by Michael Sprott, Williams fought like his career was on the line, and it was, as he knocked out Gammer in the ninth round to regain the British title in a very entertaining contest.

The fight was a back and forth battle with both fighters having their moments. Gammer appeared to be coming on strong in the eight round as he unleashed some hard shots on Williams that were left unanswered. Like a storybook ending, Williams came out in the ninth like a warrior, trapping Gammer against the ropes and letting his hands go with some hard combinations to send Gammer to his knees.

Gammer was able to beat the count of 10, but he appeared to be in very serious trouble as referee Victor Loughran waved of the contest. There were no protests from Gammer or his corner over the stoppage.
