As published reports indicated last week on BoxingScene.com, it does look like a rematch between Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28KOs) and Sergio Mora (28-4-2, 9KOs) will take place in the summer.
"It's just about a done deal, as it stands now he is our opponent," confirmed the trainer of Jacobs, Andre Rozier, to BoxingScene.com.
Last August these two engaged in a back-and-forth slugfest where both boxers hit the deck in the opening round and then Mora injured his ankle after being sent to the canvas in the second, bringing about an end to the fight. Jacobs was officially ruled the winner by second round TKO.
As for why they are reprising this match-up, Rozier admits - "I don't know why but it's an assignment that we have in front of us and we have to take care of it."
The date for this fight is July 30th at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York. The card would also feature a highly anticipated fight between WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz and unbeaten Carl Frampton.
As for the long-term plans for Jacobs, who holds a version of the WBA middleweight title, the trainer states - "Actually I'd like to see Danny and (Gennady) Golovkin get it on. That's my dream assignment. If we can get Billy Joe Saunders( the WBO titlist) before that it would be great because we'd have two champions with some weight behind them mixing it up and literally not much else at the middleweight division that we need to see."
What about one Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, one of the true cash cows in the sport?
''Listen, don't get me wrong,"says Rozier. "I love 'Canelo' but he doesn't want to fight at 160. Nobody is going to play the catch-weight game with him. So he should stay at 154 where he actually belongs and let the middleweights do what they need to do."
