Daniel Dubois didn’t dance around Carl Frampton’s question.
The hard-hitting London native feels like he “definitely” needs to knock out Oleksandr Usyk to win their 12-round heavyweight title fight Saturday night in Wroclaw, Poland. Outboxing the highly skilled, intelligent IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO champion seems improbable, thus Dubois intends to land the type of punishing punches that can put Usyk down for the first time as a pro and eventually out for the count.
Frampton, a former featherweight and junior featherweight champ, directly asked Dubois if he needs the knockout that his promoter, Frank Warren, has repeatedly predicted to win during an “Across The Table” segment for TNT Sports Boxing that premiered this week on its YouTube channel.
“Definitely,” Dubois told Frampton, an analyst for TNT Sports. “It’s in Poland. It’s an away ground. You have to do something spectacular and something amazing. You know, I wanna win in style. And this is, for me, the whole fight. I don’t wanna really look into out-pointing him and all that. I want a comprehensive finish.”
Ukraine’s Usyk will compete outside of his home country in a 12th straight bout. This fight at Tarczynski Arena Wroclaw, a soccer stadium, is about as close as Usyk can get to defending his heavyweight titles in war-torn Ukraine, however, and approximately 150,000 Ukrainians have found refuge in the Wroclaw area since Russia invaded Ukraine late in February 2022.
Alex Krassyuk, Usyk’s promotional representative, believes that the taller, supposedly stronger challenger will have much more difficulty connecting with fight-altering punches than Dubois suspects.
“Expectations from the fight is that Daniel will try his best to knock Usyk out,” Krassyuk told Frampton later during the aforementioned segment. “But to knock someone out, you know it better than I do, you need not just a heavy punch. But you need to land the punch. And if someone is moving in front of you all the time, and when you plan to land the punch somewhere and the guy is already on your left, it makes things really complicated.”
The 25-year-old Dubois has knocked out 90 percent of his opponents since he turned pro (19-1, 18 KOs). The 36-year-old Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) has produced a knockout in only one of his four heavyweight fights since the heavily favored former undisputed cruiserweight champion moved up in weight four years ago.
Usyk-Dubois will be the main event of a TNT Sports Box Office pay-per-view show in the United Kingdom and Ireland (£19.95; 6 p.m. BST). ESPN+ will stream Usyk-Dubois as a one-fight show in the United States (5 p.m. EDT; 2 p.m. PDT).
