According to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), there is still plenty to determine before a deal is finalized for a title defense against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO) on May 2nd of next year. Cotto denies any reports indicating that a deal is close to finalized.

"Everything that has been said regarding a fight against Canelo has been pure speculation. So far there is absolutely nothing [in terms of a deal]. Everything is uncertain, up in the air, so nothing is clear. There is still some way to go," said Cotto,

"I'm hoping answer, because we already sat with people from Golden Boy and we are now waiting to see what they are going to tell us. I'll go [in whatever direction] is the most beneficial to myself, so now I am just waiting. I just want the best for my career. I did not put any conditions on Canelo, I'm just asking for what is right for me, based on so I've [achieved and earned] all these years. They have the ball in their court, so they know what to do with it."

Regarding a future fight with champion Gennady Golovkin, who holds the WBC's interim-title, Cotto said it's a topic to discuss at a later time, because other options are currently being negotiated at the moment.

"Golovkin is a great fighter, a great champion. But let's wait and see what happens for next year. Everything is in negotiations right now."
