WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs) of Puerto Rico is well aware that in order to beat a boxer on the level of a Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs), he will need to be in the best physical and mental condition possible, and he needs to have a perfect strategic plan.
Therefore, Cotto has been following, to the letter, the training program designed by his Cuban coach Pedro Luis Diaz, as the two men prepare for a battle with a fighter who many consider to be the best pound for pound boxer in the world.
"So far, the training is bearing the fruit that we expected and we have done very well [in camp]. The workouts are strong and that makes it different [from the prior camps], because they are more intense routines," said Cotto.
For Diaz, it will be the second time where the Cuban coach is responsible for establishing a working strategy for the Puerto Rican champion. The first time they worked together resulted in a ten round TKO victory over Antonio Margarito last December.
"Pedro gives his best effort in his work and I give mine. This is the reason why there is such a good chemistry between us. We are working to achieve victory on May 5th, by following the plans and the [fight] pattern that Pedro has developed," said Cotto.
Cotto faces Mayweather on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
