As reported last week, four division world champion Miguel Cotto will return from a lengthy layoff to fight Yoshihiro Kamegai for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title on Aug. 26 at the StubHub Center.

Cotto has not fought since November 2015, when he lost a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez for the WBC middleweight belt. The 26-year-old native of Puerto Rico has held titles in the super lightweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight divisions. He's 40-5 with 33 knockouts. Kamegai, of Japan, is 27-3-2 with 24 KOs.

"I'm very excited to be back and showcase a high-level fight for the fans," Cotto said. "Kamegai is a great, tough fighter, but I will be ready for him and to capture the world title."

Cotto gave his opinion on the proposed fall clash between five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and MMA superstar Conor McGregor. The contest would take place as a boxing match. The negotiations are ongoing for a pay-per-view date at the end of the year. McGregor has already finalized his portion of the deal with the UFC.

The fight is very controversial, because McGregor - with zero boxing experience - would step in the ring with arguably the best fighter of this era. Mayweather retired back in September 2015 with his undefeated 49-0 record intact. He wants McGregor to officially count as his 50th pro win.

Cotto sees no reason for an MMA fighter to be involved in boxing or a boxer to be involved in MMA.

"Boxing does not need any mixed martial arts star, and at the same time MMA does not require any boxing figure. Boxing has enough stars to carry the weight of the sport on its own," Cotto told ESPN Deportes.

Cotto believes both sports could easily thrive side by side without this type of spectacle taking place.

Cotto lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Mayweather in 2012, in a competitive bout that was held at junior middleweight.
