A poll was conducted by Wales Online, who spoke to several UK experts regarding the upcoming fight between WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0,21KOs) and top British contender Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18KOs). Most are calling this fight, scheduled for February 16th in Atlantic City, a mismatch. But, there are several experts in Rees' corner who believe the big underdog can pull off an upset.
WBO light-heavyweight world champion Nathan Cleverly - "Gavin deserves this opportunity but it will be a tricky fight for him. Broner is a cute and slippery boxer and is being built as the next Mayweather – but Gavin has a chance, he’s gutsy and will give everything. I hope he can pull off a win.“
Former British, European and world champion Robbie Regan - "Gavin is up against it fighting away from home, but he’s at the right weight and has the heart of a lion. The whole of Wales is behind him and I can see a shock win."
Former WBC world cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli - "Gavin is going to shock everyone. It’s going to be tough out there but it won’t faze him. I don’t believe Broner has fought anyone as tough as Gavin, so it’s ‘The Rock’ to win a close points decision for me.”
Former WBC world super-middleweight champion and top boxing commentator Richie Woodhall - "It’s a tough fight for Gavin but not an impossible task. His best chance of success is to get close and swarm all over Broner, this will restrict him and not allow him to get into his rhythm. Gavin can achieve by setting a high work-rate but head movement on the inside is crucial to avoid Broner’s speed when moving in close."
