Former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron is on the comeback trail and wants to get right back in the mix in 2009. The first order of business on November 15 is Lovemore Ndou, a former junior welterweight champion who is moving up in weight to take the fight. Ndou has never been stopped, Cintron wants to become the first.
Cintron is currently preparing for the Ndou fight in Texas with new trainer Ronnie Shields, who took over for Emanuel Steward. He returns from the April knockout loss to Antonio Margarito. It was Cintron's second fight with Margarito, both of which ended with knockout defeats. Both defeats were punishing, but Cintron is willing to do it again by fighting Margarito for a third time.
"Right now I am in Houston training with the idea of becoming a more complete boxer and to see if can get back to the top of the division," Cintron told Primera Hora. "I would love to fight Margarito again. Right now he's the best at 147-pounds and I've always said that I want to fight against the best."
Several weeks ago, Cintron and his promoter Lou DiBella told BoxingScene.com that fight with another fellow-Puerto Rican, former Miguel Cotto, former two-division champion, would be a great fight to put together. Cotto has expressed his interest in fighting Cintron. If Top Rank places Cintron in front of him, he plans to accept the fight. Cotto is said to be returning on February 14, his first bout after being knocked out by Margarito in July.
"The possibility [of a Cotto fight] always exists. It all depends on the promoters. I'm really interested in a fight with him and there has been some talk [about the fight] in the past," Cintron said.
