Fresh off his two-round destruction of Walter Matthysse at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (28-1, 26KOs) spoke with BoxingScene.com's Bill Emes about the possibility of a unification bout taking place between him and WBC champ Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Cintron, who is gunning for all the big names and all the big belts, does not think Mayweather is willing to take the risk of fighting him. He feels that Floyd is simply picking his opponents based on the level of risk.
"It's a fight that's a little risky for him. I think he's picking his fighters now. From what I hear he wants to fight Ricky Hatton. Ricky Hatton is a 140-pounder who comes forward. In my opinion anybody in the welterweight division can beat him. I think he's picking his opponents and doesn't want to take the big risk," Cintron said.
One man that Cintron hopes is willing to take the risk is Shane Mosley, who may be in line to fight WBA titleholder Miguel Cotto.
"I heard Shane Mosley wants to fight for a title. I'm a champion. Let's get it on," Cintron said.
Cintron was slated to face Mosley on HBO in February, but he became involved in a promotional dispute that turned into a legal battle between Bobby Bostick Promotions and Main Events. Main Events won the legal battle and reclaimed Cintron to their stable of fighters. Due to the legal ramifications at the time, Golden Boy Promotions was forced to replace Cintron with Luis Collazo.
Now that the legal battles are done and both fighters have open schedules, Cintron hopes to get Mosley in the ring.
