World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai is not looking to face Romanian 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez until September.
The WBC recently ordered the two boxers to face each other in a mandatory rematch, but Rungvisai wants to make an optional defense in his home country of Thailand and for this reason his team asked that the fight with Chocolatito be carried out in September.
However, Román would be ready for that rematch by the time July comes around.
Last month at New York's Madison Square Garden, Sor Rungvisai pulled off a big upset when he won a twelve round majority decision to capture the WBC belt and hand Gonzalez his first career defeat. At the time of the contest Gonzalez was rated by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. With that loss, González's record fell to 46-1 and 38 knockouts.
Carlos Blandon, manager of Gonzalez, says the rematch date is up in the air.
"We do not know the exact date, but what is certain is that Román would be ready for the rematch in the month of July or August and we know that the Thai doesn't want to take the fight until September," said Blandón to ESPN Deportes.
The WBC ordered the rematch because Gonzalez had suffered at least two bad cuts from accident head clashes and there were no points penalized. In certain jurisdictions, the WBC deducts a point from the boxer who is uninjured from the head clash.
The sanctioning body also ordered a final eliminator between two former world champions from Mexico, Juan Francisco Estrada and Carlos Cuadras. The winners of both ordered fights would have to collide in a mandatory encounter. Cuadras was initially the mandatory challenger hoped to get Sor Rungvisai in the ring, but the sanctioning body went in another direction.
