The legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. has promised that his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., will not repeat the same mistakes that were made in 2012, when Chavez Jr. defended his WBC middleweight title against Sergio Martinez at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The contest was very winnable for Chavez Jr. and could have made him a major player - but he never took his training camp seriously.

For unknown reasons, he refused to go to the gym and would hold training sessions in the living room of a house he was renting in the Las Vegas area. Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, who handled Chavez Jr. at the time, lost his mind with the erratic camp.

Chavez Jr. was able to make the weight, which was incredible considering everything that took place in the camp.

In the fight, Chavez Jr. was slow and couldn't put his punches together. Martinez dominated practically eleven rounds of the fight - until he nearly pulled off a miracle by hurting and dropping Martinez in the twelfth and final round. Martinez was badly hurt and the arena filled with Mexican fans went bananas, but by that point Chavez Jr had no energy left in the tank to finish Martinez off.

After the fight, Chavez Jr. also tested positive for marijuana in the post-fight drug test. He was fined and suspended as a result.

"That was one of my son's worst preparations," said Chavez Sr. to A la Vera Of the Ring.

"He did things his way, and when you do things your way - nothing comes out like you want it to. And he paid the consequences. Martinez was in his prime and he's a great fighter ... difficult to fight, he was very good. It was a real problem that Julio did not arrive as he should have arrived."

On May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Chavez Jr. will go up against countryman Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. He is being trained by Hall of Fame coach Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain for the contest.
