Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez is celebrating that his son Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has retained Nacho Beristáin as the head trainer for the Mexican mega-match with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on May 6th at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.
The legendary Chavez gave his vote of approval to the new trainer of his son Julio.
"[Hiring] Nacho Beristain, of course I like it, " Chavez Sr. told ESPN Deportes before the Zanfer Promotions card where Jackie Nava returned after almost two years of absence from the ring.
"Don Nacho Beristáin is an institution, a man with a lot of experience. I think he will contribute a lot to my son Julio, especially in the discipline department. Julio is aware that Nacho does not go around with his [wasting his time], he tells [his fighters] the truth. Julio will not need Nacho to scold him or tell him anything because he is doing things right, he knows what he has to do in order to beat Canelo," Chavez Sr. said.
In fact, Chavez recalled that in 1998 he had Nacho Beristáin in his corner when he faced Miguel Ángel González for the super lightweight championship of the World Boxing Council in Plaza México. The fight ended with a twelve round draw.
Chavez Sr. was going through a lot of personal issues at the time and says despite all of that he still managed to pull out a draw, and he fully credits that result to Nacho's preparation in training camp.
"I did well with Nacho. What happened is that I personally was very poorly prepared for the fight with Miguel Angel Gonzalez, but Don Nacho did a great job with me, and I still got the draw," said Chavez Sr.
Chavez and Canelo are scheduled to go on a high profile media tour in the coming weeks.
