Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) says his renewed relationship with legendary trainer Freddie Roach is stronger than ever.
The two of them have been back to work for the last two weeks after Chavez decided to part ways with Robert Garcia and made a return to Roach's Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.
There is talk of Chavez Jr. making his ring return on July 30th, possibly against Gabe Rosado. Chavez has been out of the ring since last July after suffering a serious hand injury in his decision win over Marcos Reyes.
Chavez and Roach worked together for a few years and it was a very successful relationship. The Mexican star broke away from Roach in 2012 after leaving promoter Top Rank and signing with Al Haymon and the Premier Boxing Champions banner.
"When I decided to return to Roach I did it with a lot of will and discipline. I have to use what I have. Everything has been fine since I came back with Freddie. We're both happy and waiting to fight on July 30 against whoever. We're getting along great with Freddie. I've always admired him but now there is more commitment," he said to ESPN Deportes.
"The advantage now is that I speak a little English and the communication between us is more fluid. I feel we are on the same channel right now, and in that respect I feel that everything has been improving, even my relationship with my dad, who is equally happy and that has motivated me, that drives me to keep working.
"I work three hours with Freddie in the gym, now I'm in a camp where I'm in shape. I spent a lot of time training at home because there was nothing on the table and I was simply exercising. But were are working hard for July 30th, although there is no opponent confirmed at the moment."
