WBC silver middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. spoke with journalist Virginia Vazquez about the win from last month over John Duddy and his desire to fight WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Chavez said his next fight will take place on September 25, possibly in Mexico.
He was very pleased with the ten round decision over "Irish" John Duddy. Chavez sees the win as a big plus for his career but it didn't make him the best fighter from Mexico.
"I felt the fight against John Duddy gave me a lot of credibility, but beyond that I'm not the best Mexican fighter because there are people like like [Juan Manuel] Marquez and [Antonio] Margarito, who have made history, but whether I could be the next boxing idol Mexico is definitely something that excites me and I'm going to work hard to be the best boxer in Mexico," Chavez Jr. said.
Chavez said his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, spoke to him about a possible fight with Cotto. The young Mexican fighter hopes the Cotto fight can happen before the end of the year. Because of his famous last name, he feels some of the pressure to be the best.
"The last fight [against Duddy] comforted me a lot, especially because it came after seven months of suspension. I know that as a Chavez, there is always more expected from you, but I must say that there is little pressure because a lot of people believe in me, especially after my last fight," Chavez said.
