Light heavyweight Chad Dawson is aiming to set the record straight on November 7 when he meets Glen Johnson in a rematch at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The IBO and WBC interim-light heavyweight title will be on the line. They met last April in a fight where Dawson was rocked pretty bad but held on to win a close decision. Some thought Dawson won. Some thought Johnson won. Chad wants to settle the issue and leave Johnson in the past.
"A lot of people thought it was a controversial fight. I didn't see it [like that]. I think the rematch is something that I have to do for myself and the fans. I just wants to dominate and show everybody that I'm the better fighter," Dawson told BoxingScene.com's Ernest Gabion.
He says the first time around he made a mistake by fighting Johnson's fight by allowing himself to get involved in a back and forth brawl. This time he plans to use his boxing skills to dominate the action and keep the fight at a certain pace.
"This time I plan to fight my fight. Last I fought his fight. It was back and forth, back and forth. That's not my style of fighting. I tried to prove that I was tough, that I could hang in there with guys like Tarver and Johnson. This time I want to go in there and dominate and show everyone the first fight wasn't really that close. I'm going to pick up where I left off, outbox him and outwork him, which I think I clearly did in the first fight," Dawson said.
If all goes well with Johnson, he would like to fight either Bernard Hopkins or somehow lure Joe Calzaghe out of retirement.
"After that I hope I get Bernard. He said he would fight the winner of this fight. Hopefully he doesn't go back on his word. Bring Joe Calzaghe out of retirement. If I can get those two fights, what else can I say," Dawson said.
The winner of the Super Six tournament and IBF cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek are also options. Dawson dominated Adamek a few years ago.
"I'm very interested in that. There's Tomasz Adamek at cruiserweight. Maybe I'll take detour," Dawson said.
