Eddy Reynoso, trainer of WBC middleweight world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs), believes IBO/WBA/IBF champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin deserves to get a fighter with his boxer.
Canelo will defend his title against British superstar Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBC title. The winner of Canelo-Khan will be forced by the sanctioning body to defend the belt against Golovkin in the fall.
Earlier this week, Canelo said Golovkin was not deserving of the fight and needed to do more in order to get in the ring with him.
"Look, I've fought the best, I've never been afraid of anyone. You look at my last ten opponents compared to his last ten opponents and you guys can see. There is no reason to be afraid of him," Canelo said.
"If it was really about business or it was really about money, then we would have done it already because a lot of people want to see the fight. He needs to work his way up. He needs to earn his shot."
"He has to fight someone who can complicate him, someone who has skills. Yeah has all of these knockouts - but who has he fought? [He's fought] opponents that are right there to be hit."
Reynoso actually disagreed with his fighter and says Golovkin is deserving of the fight - if they are able to reach an agreement on the terms. Canelo wants a catch-weight of 155-pounds, which is not agreeable to Golovkin.
"I think Golovkin deserves the fight. He is a champion, one of the best pound for pound, but it is a matter of business. We will sit down with Oscar de la Hoya and see what will follow after this," Reynoso said. "We are ready to fight with him, as long the situation suits us."
"It's an interesting fight, a tough fight, but it's also not a difficult fight - because facing a fighter who only throw stones and only knows how to go forward is not a difficult fight, it's a tough fight. GGG is very strong, but we've faced strong fighters and we've come out ahead."
