The next move for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is still very much undecided, according to Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez.
Canelo was scheduled to return on May 2 in Las Vegas, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.
The tentative opponent was WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders - but the entire event was pushed back, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Canelo already has a deal in place for a trilogy fight against Gennadiy Golovkin, on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
But until the restrictions are lifted, there is no telling at the moment on whether or not Canelo will return in July or head straight to a fight with Golovkin in September.
"We won't know until we are ready to start business again. It has a lot to do with where the fight will take place and whether we can have fans. We will get down to the nitty gritty when restrictions are lifted," Gomez told Sky Sports.
And the possibility of staging an event behind closed doors is not being ruled out.
"We have to consider anything and everything. If we are forced to, we have to consider that. But Canelo is the biggest draw in boxing and many fans get excited to watch him. Any available option, we have to consider it," Gomez said.
Another fight that was under consideration, was a bout against Ryota Murata in Japan. Their talks fell through over the financials.
"There were great sponsors behind it and it was a great business deal," Gomez said. "Obviously, Murata is one of the top champions at middleweight so that was a consideration as well."
Canelo has been out of the ring since November of 2019, when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title. He vacated the belt a few weeks later.
