Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) shocked everyone on Saturday night, when he came forward and pushed the pace of the fight against Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas,
With his aggression and speed, Canelo was able to secure a twelve round majority decision with scores of 114-114, 115-113, 115-113 to capture the WBC, WBA, IBO middleweight titles and handed Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) his first career defeat.
The bout was the first for Canelo since September 2017, when he fought Golovkin to a controversial twelve round split draw.
Canelo is interested in fighting in December, possibly against former IBF world champion David Lemieux - who on Saturday's undercard scored a sensational first round knockout of Spike O'Sullivan.
But, Canelo suffered a cut above his eye in the fight with Golovkin - and that could possibly push back his plans.
The Mexican superstar will follow the orders of his doctor.
"I think they gave me six stitches, we'll see what the doctor tells us," Canelo said to ESPN Deportes.
There is also a question of where Canelo will fight. His contract with HBO expired with Saturday's fight - which makes him the biggest network free agent in boxing.
Canelo was very proud of his performance, which gained him the biggest win of his pro career and solidified him as the top boxer at 160-pounds.
"Well, that's what I wanted to do (win the recognition of the fans), I think that's the most important thing, I'm left with the victory, it's one of the most important days in my career," Canelo stated.
"I came forward without deviating in the strategies I had, he had his rounds, he had his moments, but I had a goal and I wanted to fulfill it, unfortunately the knockout was not given, but I think the victory is very important. Despite everything that has happened, things happen and today it is marked that everything can be done in this life."
