Five years after its launch and on the eve of their exclusive U.K broadcast of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez's WBC middleweight title defence against Britain's Amir Khan, BoxingScene goes behind the scenes at Boxnation, the world's only dedicated boxing channel.
Charlie Webster acts as a regular presenter for the channel on fight nights in addition to hosting her own “Charlie's Web” show alongside Anthony Ogogo, a former Olympian and unbeaten middleweight contender, and Dev Sahni, who doubles as the channel's Digital Media man.
Webster recalls how she secured “My first break at Sky Sports, something I'll always be grateful to them for.”
“I'm a big boxing fan—I do love boxing!” she added, and had held a burning ambition to be more deeply involved in the sport. Webster explains it wasn't easy to break into a male dominated business, suffering her share of “Knock-backs along the way.”
A first taste working on the sweet science came when she was handed a chance to present Prizefighter. This led to an enjoyable assignment with the 2012 Olympic podium squad, a stint which Charlie enthusiastically recalls covered eventual Gold medal winner Nicola Adams MBE’s run.
She jumped at the chance to join BoxNation and in January this year launched her own popular weekly show “Charlie's Web”, an irreverent thirty minutes of quick fire clips and discussion.
“The 12 round concept was my idea to help keep the content sharp and fast,” says Charlie of a format that moves along swiftly with the light-hearted aim of completing 12 “rounds” of topics. “If we get there, we get there.”
Of course, the title of the show is a play on words as most fans now consume boxing using different devices. Its strong social media element makes the show highly interactive, providing fans an opportunity to partake in various polls.
Charlie explains the idea is “To generate more debate and opinions”.
“We (BoxNation) had been talking about (me) doing my own show for some time and obviously boxing is booming,” added Web. “We wanted to come up with something which felt fresh and young.”
Webster's co-presenter, Dev Sahni, doubles as Digital, Online and Social Media specialist, where he oversees a busy BoxNation Twitter account. At events, Sahni can often be seen buzzing around taking smartphone photographs like other fans.
Sahni tells me he was working in Online Marketing for a European train company when as “a huge boxing fan”, he sent a “speculative CV to BoxNation”. Right time, right place, right man as Sahni beams: “Now I'm doing my dream job!”
Dev confirms his boxing knowledge was screened during an early telephone interview. He was able to demonstrate genuine interest from making the trip to Mayweather-Maidana I, enthusiastically recalling a stacked bill that included Khan-Collazo and Broner-Molina—future colleague Anthony Ogogo also featured on that big MGM show.
Initially hired as Digital Manager with a specific task to improve the BoxNation website, this role led to other projects. It all culminated in his stint on "Charlie's Web”. “It was a fluke, really,” he declared, downplaying his rapid rise.
BoxingScene admitted to being initially sceptical of the newcomer presented in “Dev's Corner”. A good sport, he laughs, admitting he was initially viewed very much the “outsider” to an established former sky presenter and Olympic amateur. Sahni now feels very much part of the team.
He enjoys listening to fan podcasts on the way to and from work, devouring anything boxing related. However, as may befit a social media guru, he tends to lean more towards video and audio than long-form journalism.
Sahni has warm words for his colleagues, telling me that boxing stalwart Jim Rosenthal provides the operation with “An aura of class” and referring to long time boxing journalist and current BoxNation presenter/pundit Steve Bunce warmly as “The big man”.
Charlie's Web has been absent for the last couple of weeks as team resources are fully focussed on Canelo-Khan content. “It's coming back, don't worry,” Webster assured me before adding that she's "gutted" not to be in Las Vegas this weekend for the big one due to contractual commitments.
Presenting at a big Sin City fight remains an unfulfilled ambition. She has already ticked off the Olympics, the 100m final, Champions League as well as World Cup duties. “I tried to rearrange my schedule but it wouldn't work,” she said. Still, she can sit back, relax and catch it on BoxNation.
U.K. fans can watch all the action from 1.30 Sunday morning, with the main event expected at 5am U.K. time.
