Canelo to score a knockdown and to win via decision/technical decision – 9/2 (+450)
One of the oldest sayings in boxing is, “You’re only as good as your last fight,” and, to be honest, it’s pretty much always spot on. We sometimes look too far in the past to when a fighter was icing people out, thinking he will do the same five years later. This is true when it comes to Canelo, we have to go off what he has shown us recently, not the Canelo of old. His last seven fights have gone the full scheduled 12 rounds, with him winning the last six by unanimous decision – the other a UD loss to Dmitry Bivol in 2022 for the WBA light heavyweight title.
Canelo has also had four of his last five opponents touching the canvas at some point in the contest. He’s dropped good opposition too, Jermall Charlo was a undisputed 154lb champion moving up two divisions to face Canelo – much like Crawford – and found himself on the floor before taking Canelo the distance. Now Crawford hasn’t been dropped in any of his 41 professional boxing matches, but I sense at 37 years old and not being hit by a man of Canelo’s size before, he may taste the canvas at some point. Anyone can be hurt.
I also think with Canelo’s activity coupled with Crawford’s inactivity of late, this contest could be a straightforward one for Canelo. Crawford has never boxed higher than 154lbs, and he didn’t set the world alight against Israel Madrimov. It’s a big jump up from junior middleweight to 168lbs, and I expect a similar contest to Canelo-Charlo. Canelo to score at least one knockdown is 7/4 (+175) and that coupled with Canelo to win by decision/technical decision at 5/4 (+125) comes in at 9/2 (+450).
Canelo Alvarez to win in Rounds 1-4 – 25/1 (+2500)
Now this bet may seem an odd one considering what I have just written, but there is a method to my madness. We’ve established that Canelo has been knocking down his opponents in nearly all of his contests of late – the fight he didn't was against William Scull who ran for 12 rounds. Those knockdowns have come pretty early on too; Berlanga (Round 3), Munguia (Round 4), Ryder (Round 5), Charlo (Round 7). Now, Crawford has not boxed since fighting Madrimov in August last year, and before that Errol Spence in July 2023 – that’s two fights in 26 months. There will be ring rust for Crawford, who I expect to start slow, that teamed up with Canelo’s recent fast starts could mean Crawford is down early. Could Canelo finish him off too? Bet365 has Canelo to win in Rounds 1-4 at 25/1 (+2500). Worth a punt.
Crawford to win by decision/technical decision – 21/10
Now I understand a lot of fans are picking Crawford to dethrone the undisputed super middleweight champion. I personally cannot see it happening, but if it is going to happen then a decision victory seems the safest bet. Like Crawford, Canelo has never been dropped, but what’s different is that Canelo has faced much bigger men. Canelo has been competing at 168lbs and light heavyweight since 2019, I don’t think Crawford can hit Canelo with anything that he hasn’t tasted before. A Crawford decision is good enough odds at 21/10, but if you really wanted to push the boat out you could couple that up with Crawford to be knocked down and win at 16/1, that comes to 18/1 with bet365.
