Eddy Reynoso, the head trainer for Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, is hoping that the expected trilogy with Gennady Golovkin will move forward as planned, on September 12 as part of Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Canelo was scheduled to return in May, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend, but the contest was postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The most likely opponent was WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.
There was talk of that contest landing on a date in June or early July, but that scenario doesn't appear to have a good chance of coming off - at least with a live crowd in attendance - and DAZN, who have an exclusive deal with Canelo, are likely not going to start handing events again until July.
Because of the circumstances, Canelo's first bout of the year is looking more and more likely to take place in September.
And Canelo's trainer is already looking at the reality of boxer not fighting until September. Most of the time, Canelo has his first fight of the year in May.
Canelo last fought in November, when he moved up to the light heavyweight division to score a knockout over Sergey Kovalev for the WBO world title.
“Hopefully this problem will end soon (the coronavirus pandemic ). We are under the belief that by September everything will be back to normal, we hear that maybe we are going to fight Golovkin, but we are going to see what changes the platforms undergo in terms of opponents and fights - because everything has an order and hopefully not dates are complicated. We hope this happens. We'll just have to see what happens with Saúl," Reynoso said to ESPN Deportes.
