Former champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) is still hoping to land a shot at former three division beltholder Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs). Golden Boy Promotions have offered Cotto a guarantee of $10 million dollars to face Canelo on March 8th, on Showtime Pay-Per-View, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
But Cotto is also entertaining an offer, although for less money, to take on WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden. Right now it's not completely clear who Cotto will end up fighting.
"I think me and Cotto, both of us, I think we need each other. No one can say who needs who more. It would be an interesting fight for him, for me and the people," Canelo said. "I am 23, I have a long career and you have to move forward. The fight with [Mayweather] will serve me as a great experience when I come to win."
