It was straightforward and convincing for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who outboxed and dominated fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on his way to a unanimous victory.

Chavez looked completely out of his depth in Las Vegas on Saturday as all three judges scored the main event 120-108 in favour of Canelo in the all-Mexican showdown.

The middleweight bout went the full 12 rounds but there was only ever going to be one winner on Cinco de Mayo weekend as Canelo improved to 49-1-1.

And it was a one-sided affair from the opening bell, Canelo working Chavez (50-3-1) around the ring with limited response from his opponent - the son of iconic Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez.

“This chapter is over. I enjoyed the fight, I won the fight, every single round. I had fun and that’s what I do. I love boxing,” Canelo said. “After all these years, after all the talk of who’s better, I’m very happy to demonstrate that regardless of the weight, regardless of the size advantage he had, that I’m the better fighter.”

Canelo landed punches at will and cut up Chavez in the third round as the latter made little impact.

It got worse for Chavez after boos rang around as the 31-year-old struggled to fight back in Nevada. Canelo was unable to knock down Chavez but he done enough to emerge triumphant.

IBO, IBF, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin was a notable onlooker ringside, because later in the night it was officially announced that GGG would be facing Canelo on September 16th, during Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Golovkin came to the ring to discuss the fight with Canelo. Later on, the two fighters held an unexpected press conference to discuss the details of their fight with the media. The exact location of the contest was not revealed, but Las Vegas and Texas are said to be the frontrunners.
