Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is looking to return on September 12th, and he won't step aside if Floyd Mayweather Jr. intends to fight on the date as well. Canelo is contracted to HBO, while Mayweather still has one fight remaining on his contract with Showtime.
Canelo had planned to fight on May 2nd, but moved to May 9th after Mayweather reached an agreement to face Manny Pacquiao on the date. The fight broke pay-per-view records with a 4.4 million buyrate. Canelo drew a huge television rating on HBO with a third round knockout of James Kirkland.
Mayweather says that he wants to return in September as the final fight for his career. He left the door open for a possible future fight in 2016 when telling reporters "I'm only human, I contradict myself, I change my mind."
Canelo moved away from Cinco De Mayo weekend, but seems mentally set to return during Mexican Independence Day weekend, a date when Mayweather usually fights.
"We will fight in September. We want the important dates, Mexican dates. I think after this performance [against Kirkland] and the poor performance that Mayweather gave last week [with Manny Pacquiao], we are ready to fight in September," manager and trainer Edison Reynoso told ESPN Deportes.
"We are ready for September and God willing we will prepare in July in San Diego and look for an interesting fight in September. [September 12] is big date for Mexicans and we will prepare and seek to fight on that date. We will speak with [Oscar] De La Hoya about an opponent who can give us a great fight."
Should WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto defeat Daniel Geale in June, there is a very good chance he will face Canelo in the fall.
