Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) has brushed off any further talk of a future fight with IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), and says his entire mental drive is focused on the upcoming fight with WBC champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs) on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Canelo is training hard in California for the upcoming contest, but much of the recent discussions have revolved around a future fight with Golovkin.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBC title. The winner of next month's fight has been ordered to face the unified champion next.
Canelo caused a stir recently with his stance of demanding a catch-weight of 155-pounds for a possible fight with Golovkin. The fight with Cotto takes place at 155 and so have Canelo's last three bouts. Golovkin and his team are not willing to fight any lower than the division limit of 160.
The boxer is not interested in debating that issue and wants to keep on pace for the Cotto bout.
"I know there has been a lot of talk about a fight against Golovkin, but I'm just thinking about Cotto. After [that fight], we'll see what happens in my career but right now my focus is on November 21 and nothing else," Canelo told Fox Deportes.
The rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico has Canelo very motivated for victory and says the ongoing training camp has been a big success. He feels physically ready to fight this weekend if needed.
"We're ready at this moment. And if the fight was today, I would go and fight without any problems. We are almost one hundred percent. We are only tweaking some things with my team but I feel ready," said Canelo.
"I know I have a great responsibility against Cotto, with the great rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico, and [for me] to leave everything in the ring for my people. But for me to represent my country - there is no pressure.....rather, it motivates me to hold up the Mexican flag."
