A fight between Adrien Broner and Marcos “Chino” Maidana is being worked on to happen December 14th in Las Vegas, NV at the MGM Grand but both men almost fought before the contracts were signed as they had an altercation at the Thursday night Fox Sports fights.
Both men had been going back and forth on Twitter the past couple weeks and things got physical when they ran into each other. I spoke to Maidana’s manager Sebastian Contursi after the incident to get an explanation as to what happened.
Contursi informed BoxingScene that Maidana was upset at Broner for referring to him in a derogatory manner using a gay slur on Twitter. Maidana had told Broner that he would confront him on the weekend of September 14th to see if he would make the same comment in person.
The always cool and calm Maidana went up to Adrien to confront him as Adrien was with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. According to Contursi, Broner put his hand on Maidana’s shoulder and Maidana then slapped Broner’s hand down as things escalated and got physical as both men pushed each other. Contursi himself was surprised at Maidana’s reaction but it was fueled due to the comment made by Broner.
I caught up with Broner briefly as he was being ushered out of the arena and he confirmed there was pushing and also said he didn’t understand what Maidana told him.
“That motherf***er don’t speak English. I don’t know what he said. It is what it is, this is boxing. This sh*t is real” said Broner.
Contursi also informed the fight is still not complete or signed and they are still working on negotiations and ironing out the particulars. He did confirm both sides are eager for the fight and hopes for something to be finalized within the coming days.
