Dmitry Bivol is keeping a close eye on the outcome of a potential super middleweight fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo.
Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion, recently signed a multi-bout deal with Premier Boxing Champions, which would pave the way for him to fight some of the top 168-pounders in the world, including David Benavidez, David Morrell, and Demetrius Andrade. But there are strong reports that Alvarez’s first fight on the deal could come against middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo, who has not fought since June 2021. Charlo would move up to 168 in that scenario.
That has left Bivol, who holds the WBA 175-pound title, looking like the odd man out, as he was originally in talks to face Alvarez in a rematch in the fall, but those negotiations collapsed.
Nevertheless, in a recent interview, Bivol made it clear he would be open to fighting Charlo, should Charlo defeat Alvarez, and even if it required Bivol to drop down in weight from 175 to 168. Bivol has previously indicated that he could comfortably make the 168-pound limit. Bivol stressed that his motivation is to collect belts, no matter the opponent.
“Yeah, if Charlo wins, I would like that fight,” Bivol told FightHubTV. “It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want to fight against someone at 168' - no. I prefer to fight at my weight class.’ If someone wants and we have a good offer to move down for belt, I will do it. But I prefer to fight at my weight class.”
Bivol says he expects to return to the ring in October, saying that September is too late for him at this point. Promoter Eddie Hearn recently stated that he was working on a deal for England’s Dan Azeez to face Bivol. Azeez is also in talks to fight Joshua Buatsi, a former client of Hearn, in what would be an eliminator match for Bivol's WBA belt.
“I hope in September or October (to fight again) - October,” Bivol said. “If September, I should have been given an offer a couple of weeks ago.”
“I’m ready for anyone in my weight class” Bivol added. “I’ll try to be ready for the top 10 fighters at light heavyweight.”
