Hatfield's Billy Joe Saunders has once again stoked the flames of conflict ahead of his November 29th European middleweight title clash with Chris Eubank Junior by suggesting that the loser pays £100,000 to charity during an appearance on British radio station TalkSport earlier today, and Eubank accepted the offer. They are fighting on the undercard of Tyson Fury's heavyweight title eliminator rematch with Dereck Chisora, the Frank Warren-promoted bill is called "Bad Blood" and is already living up to its moniker.
Although BBBoC rules prohibit bets, the champion suggested knocking up a deal to pay the sum out of the loser's purse to a charity of the winner's choice during their heated radio exchange.
"Chris is what he is, I’m a level above and it’s all about levels," stated Saunders. "Yeah, I’ll retire (if I lose). He’s going home with a bad beating and no belts. Fair play for taking it—that’s if you make it [Eubank fights this weekend]—but don’t say you’ve got a dodgy hand or a dodgy finger—it’s not fair on the British public."
The southpaw titlist then made the offer of a charity bet before reiterating his desire to beat his domestic rival. Eubank seemed unfazed throughout, declaring that he is: "[F]it, on weight and ready to go."
He added: "People say he (Saunders) is preparing like he’s fighting for a world title, he knows he’s not going to win. It’s only a matter of time before I bring the belts back to Brighton.”
Saunders was not done, though; he countered by pledging to dish out a lesson or two at London's ExCel Arena. "On the 29th, you are going to get taken to school," he said. "I went to the Olympics at 18 years of age, at eighteen years of age you were sat on your dad’s lap stroking his head."
It is not the first time that Saunders, 20-0 (11), has thrown a cash offer on the table during the build-up to this contest; the 25-year-old offered to pay Eubank £20,000 to ditch this weekend’s warm-up bout at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. Eubank, though, is still pencilled in for an eight-threes on Saturday night, which is proving more of a distraction to Saunders judging by his offer to pay Eubank to spike the fight.
Eubank's opponent for Satruday has also been revealed, he will face Omar Siala in Liverpool. The 25-year-old German has a 23-17-3 (10) slate and has won his last two—over Josef Holub (W KO 3) and Nikola Ivkovic (W TKO 4) respectively—but had been stopped twice himself prior to picking up those wins and should be meat and drink to Eubank, who will want to make a statement ahead of the biggest fight of his career.
Indeed, Eubank, 25, has steadfastly refused to buckle in the face of growing calls to nix this weekend’s date despite a busy 2014. The challenger will no doubt hope that his opponent simply serves as a tool-sharpening foil for a few rounds.
