World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Miguel "Alacran" Berchelt will make another title defense at the end of May or in June on United soil or in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, according to his promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions.

Beltran assured that after that defense, he will make the mandatory obligation against Miguel Román, and the negotiations for that should begin in July to make the fight.

The promoter said they expect a very active year for Berchelt with three more fights in the remainder of 2018, and therefore he will make a second voluntary defense in the first half, after knocking out Maxwell Awuku in three rounds on February 10 in Cancun, Quintana Roo.

"We are adjusting the details, only defining the venue and waiting for the signing of contracts from the opponent for a new defense of the WBC champion, Miguel Berchelt," said Beltrán to ESPN Deportes.

"I hope that by next week I'll be able to make an announcement about it, whether it's a fight in the United States or in Merida, Yucatán.

"I read that they are willing to go to a purse bid - Miguel Román, who is the mandatory challenger - and his team. It seems very good to me, but first we must attend to this new defense. We are in the optional period and it won't be until July that we will attend that case, we want Berchelt to make another defense, then the mandatory one and we close the year with a high caliber fight."

Berchelt will report to the camp in a few days in Hermosillo, Sonora, under the tutelage of Alfredo Caballero, as he was notified of this third defense of the championship - after defeating Takashi Miura and Awuku.

Román's promoter, Osvaldo Küchle, has said that they are willing to go to the purse bid for the fight with Berchelt - since they want to make a strong investment to take the fight to the football stadium in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.
