Promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions has said that former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will fight at the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds for his next fight. Chavez has been inactive for a year and last fought at 160, but he struggled to make the 168 contract limit for tonight's fight with Bryan Vera in Carson, California. On Wednesday the weight was increased to a catch-weight limit of 173-pounds. Beltran co-promotes Chavez with Top Rank.
"We all know that Julio comes from being inactive for a year and we wanted protect his health. Our intention, maybe even over his, to reappear in the best possible condition against a strong opponent, who hits hard with the right hand and someone who we wouldn't overlook at all. In his next fight, he will drop to 168-pounds or probably a little less. He wants to try [fighting] 168 and then make a decision on whether or not he wants to stay there. Julio is a pretty big boy, a strong boy, and you could see that he didn't have an overweight physique and he also looked strong," Beltran said.
