Former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera is really looking forward to a fall unification between middleweight champions Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC world title.
The two fighters were given permission to have interim bouts before facing each other in the fall.
Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) will defend his WBA/IBO/IBF world titles against Dominic Wade in an HBO televised main event on April 23rd at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. Canelo will face Amir Khan at a catch-weight of 155-pounds on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo-Khan will the main event of an HBO Pay-Per-View.
Barrera says the bout between Canelo and Golovkin is a natural match to make.
"They are at the same weight and when this fight happens we are going to say 'let's see if we get what we want from him' - while it is still necessary to see what he does with Amir," Barrera said.
"He still lacks that signature fight. Triple G is the one in that division [to give him that fight]. [GGG is] very popular right now and Canelo will be able to demonstrate [just how good he really is], because Canelo has the necessary qualities to beat Triple G if he has a good strategy. [Canelo] is a good young fighter. And in his last fight [against Miguel Cotto] he demonstrated some good speed and punching ability."
