McWilliams Arroyo picked up his 10th consecutive win with a seventh round knockout of Ronald Ramos in their main event Thursday evening in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
Arroyo controlled the action from the get go, playing up to the partisan crowd in his native Puerto Rico. Ramos traveled all the way from Colombia to play the willing role of challenger and looked every bit the part in their scheduled 12-round flyweight belt, with a regional title at stake.
With the winner never in doubt, Arroyo decided to give the hometown crowd a memorable ending. The 2008 Olympic boxer did just that, connecting with a left hook that sent Ramos down and – for all intent and purposes – out. The referee recognized as much and waved off the bout.
The official time was 2:28 of round.
Arroyo advances to 13-1 (11KO) with the win, his 10th straight since suffering a shocking loss at Madison Square Garden early in his career. Ramos falls to 32-11-3 (17KO) in defeat, snapping a three fight win streak.
On the undercard, twin brother McJoe Arroyo (11-0, 6KO) remained unbeaten after scoring a fourth round stoppage against fellow Boricua super flyweight Jose Lopez (38-11-2, 32KO). Two knockdowns for Arroyo prompted the referee to step in at 2:24 of round four.
In the evening’s co-feature, unbeaten two-time junior flyweight titlist Yesica Bopp had her way with Marisol Miranda en route to an 7th round stoppage.
Bopp traveled all the way from Argentina, bringing the TyC Sports camera crew in tow (her involvement on the card responsible for the network airing the fight live). The 28-year old impressed every step of the way against Miranda, who fights out of Orlando, Florida.
The bout was mercifully stopped when a damaged eye was deemed too severe for the overmatched Miranda to continue.
The official time of the title fight was 1:22 of round seven.
Bopp improves to 22-0 (10KO) with the win. Nearly her entire career has been spent as a major titlist, holding two bouts for nearly duration of their existence.
Miranda falls to .500, her record now at 5-5 (1KO).
Other results:
Pedro Vicente (2-0, 1KO) scored his first career stoppage with a third-round stoppage of Hipolito Rivera (1-5, 1KO) in their super featherweight bout. Two knockdowns prompted a stoppage at 2:19 of the third round.
Efrian Cruz (2-0, 1KO) pitched a shutout over Jesus Pastrana (2-2, 1KO) in a four-round matchup of San Juan-based lightweights. Scores were 40-36 across the board.
Pablo DeJesus (3-0, 3KO) remains a knockout every time out. The super welterweight had his way with Harold Cartagena (1-1, 1KO) before the fight was stopped at 0:50 of round three.
Anthony Mercado (1-0, 1KO) enjoyed a successful pro debut with a first round knockout of Alejandro Gonzalez (0-1, 0KO) in their super lightweight preliminary bout. Mercado scores two knockdowns before forcing a stoppage after just 0:40 of action.
