While the Showtime network is trying to make a fight between Antonio Tarver and undefeated light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, Tarver is still trying to campaign for a bout with fellow Floridian Jeff Lacy.
The two fighters attempted to come together in 2006, but several snags over money caused a fallout during negotiations. Lacy has not fought since a majority-decision win over Vitali Tsypko in December 06. He injured his left shoulder during the fight, which required surgery and has kept him out of action for several months. Reportedly, the shoulder is fully healed and he's now ready for a return to the ring.
The Tampa Tribune spoke with Tarver, who told the paper that he would love to fight again in Tampa, with former super middleweight champ Lacy as the opponent.
"I want to bring a fight to Tampa again. I'd love to do it there sometime in September. My goal is to stay busy this year and there are some people out there I'm considering," Tarver said. "Jeff is the biggest name available, but the networks are lukewarm on him. The networks will dictate a lot. The last time we tried to make this fight happen, his people had their own ideas on how much they felt they were worth and that took the fight right off the table. It didn't make sense what they were dictating, but I'd like to hear what they have to say now."
