Angel Garcia, father and trainer of WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, disagrees with Amir Khan's decision to stay inactive while waiting for a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Khan has been inactive since last April, when he struggled to win a close points decision over Julio Diaz. For almost a year, Khan sat back and even withdrew from a planned December fight with then IBF champion Devon Alexander, because the British star was confident of landing a lucrative slot against Mayweather on May 3rd.
The Mayweather fight never came. Instead, Mayweather selected WBA champion Marcos Maidana as his next opponent.
Since Mayweather made his announcement last week, Khan has been furious with being passed over.
Garcia says the British fighter only has himself to blame for the unfortunate outcome.
"Why would he sit back? He has his own name. People love him in his country. He has a big following over there. His fanbase is crazy. I would never do that [with Danny]. Why would you wait on somebody? You are already a star. He is already known. It's not like that fight would have made him. He has his own fanbase without Floyd. It would have been a good fight for both because the two of them could have created a bigger fanbase [for the fight], but no [he shouldn't have waited]. He could have had like four fights already. He would have made just as much money [from those four fights] as he would have made for Floyd," Garcia told BoxingScene.com.
