Earlier tonight BoxingScene.com managed to grab a quick word with ‘Irish’ Andy Lee 33-2 (23 KOs) amidst rumours that he is in line to face WBC Middleweight champion, Miguel Cotto 39-4 (32 KOs) later this year.
Lee who had dropped back down to 154lbs in June with an emphatic fifth round knockout victory over John Jackson had been heavily linked to facing domestic rival Matthew Macklin in Dublin in November.
Last month, Lee said this to ‘Scene about the possibility of facing Macklin: “I’m open to the fight and hopefully it can be done. I don’t see any obstacle there. I want the fight and if he wants the fight we’ll get it on.”
Cotto is fresh off one of the best wins of his career after a surprise dismantling over former middleweight king Sergio Martinez. Lee’s promoter, Lou DiBella, told ESPN’s Dan Rafael that his man really wants the fight and believes there would be a similar crowd to what Cotto-Martinez drew.
Lee is now a man in demand with Cotto, Macklin and the paying public keen to see more of him after his KO of the year candidate against Jackson.
“There’s nothing official in place,” Lee told BoxingScene.
“I’ve told Lou DiBella and [trainer] Adam Booth that’s the fight I want. It would be an honour to fight a great champion like Cotto. I’ve trained with him and respect him but feel I have the style to beat him.”
