Former world champion Amir Khan is backing Anthony Joshua as the "A-side" of the unification equation when compared to heavyweight rival Tyson Fury.

"You've got the heavyweight division at its best right now. It's the best it's going to be. In my opinion, it's the best division out there at this time. We've not had it like this for a long time. There's AJ, the world champion, Fury the new world champion, beating Deontay Wilder. Wilder, who seemed untouchable," Khan told Sky Sports.

"The heavyweight division is the one everyone is talking about and for the UK to have two massive names and two world champions, it can only lead to one massive fight, if AJ and Fury happens."

Joshua and Fury have other duties to deal with.

Fury, who holds the WBC world title, has a trilogy fight contracted for the fall, against Deontay Wilder. And WBO, WBA, IBF, IBO world champion Joshua has to make a mandatory defense against Kubrat Pulev, also in the coming months.

Should they both win once those duties are done, then the two heavyweights will be in line to collide - and the financial terms will have to be worked out.

While Khan views Joshua as the money man of the heavyweight division, he regards Fury as the top fighter of the weight class after huge wins over Wladiir Klitschko and Wilder.

"We all know the 'A-side' of the heavyweights is AJ. He is the A-side, he is the big name and he brings the money to the table. There are so many names out there, I don't know what route AJ is going to take. Is Fury No 1 in the heavyweights? Definitely. You can't fault that Fury is No 1. He's proven that, having drawn against and beaten Wilder; not just beating him but knocking him out," Khan said.
