During a recent interview with Sport of The World, WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan placed a target on the back of former three division champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Khan's countryman, Ricky Hatton, is also plotting a fight against Marquez in 2010. Hatton wants to go directly to a fight with Marquez. Khan, who must first beat mandatory Dmitriy Salita on December 5, says Hatton is making a mistake by going directly to Marquez without a tuneup.
"I thought Ricky might come back and have one easy fight just to get rid of the flashbacks. Fighting Marquez straightaway will be tough," Khan said.
Khan said he is on a mission to face someone like Marquez. He feels that Marquez's style is tailor-made for him. In the last couple of weeks, Khan has made it clear to his promoter Frank Warren that he wants to fight in America in 2010. He sees a fight with Marquez as the ticket to big things in America.
"It is my mission to fight men like Marquez and that would be my dream fight in America. I think he is made for my style and if I beat Marquez, it would make my name a lot bigger and people will start knowing who Amir Khan is in the States," Khan said.
"I will see how this fight goes and then we will see where we are. I think Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton left it a bit late going to America but I want to go early, take it smoothly and pick the right fights."
