Earlier this year, Golden Boy Promotions and manager/adviser Al Haymon reached an undisclosed agreement to go their separate ways. Haymon walked away with an army of his fighters.
But, a very small number of Haymon's fighters remained contractually obligated to Golden Boy. However, there was a contractual clause in those remaining contracts which allow Haymon to fully purchase them.
One fighter who many believed was still contractually obligated to Golden Boy was Amir Khan (30-3, 19KOs).
When Khan recently announced a potential fight with Chris Algieri for late May, BoxingScene.com had asked Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya if his company would get involved in the promotion . De La Hoya refused to comment on the subject matter.
Khan tells BoxingScene that he's confident their agreement is over, but he doesn't rule out the possibility of one day working with Golden Boy in the future. He says the only person with a contractual claim on his upcoming ring return is Haymon.
"Basically Oscar is a good friend of mine. We are still friends. I've had a great relationship with them. It's whatever is in black and white. I left everything up to my lawyer and my lawyer told me that I'm a free agent - and the only ties that I have is with Al Haymon," Khan told BoxingScene.com. "I had a great relationship with them. Nothing against Oscar, I think he's a great businessman. They have a great promotion team, but it's just what makes sense for me financially."
"On the business end, you have to look at it and I'm in a very lucky position where I can make a lot of money and that upsets a lot of fighters and promoters out there. [My contract] is in black and white. When I spoke to my lawyer, he told me 'everything is fine and you are a free agent.' Only Al Haymon has rights on my next fight."
