According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, an agreement was reached to extend the promotional agreement with WBA junior welterweight king Amir Khan (25-1, 17KOs). The British star has signed a new multi-fight deal with Golden Boy. Last Saturday night in Manchester, Khan won a unanimous six round technical decision over Irish fighter Paul McCloskey.
"We did extend our contract with Amir. We did come to an agreement to execute a new multi-fight deal with Amir Khan. That happened just last week, so you know, we did that just last week. We have finalized a new multi-fight deal with Amir, and we're very excited about it," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
"We're happy because I think that under this new multi-fight deal that Amir will get some very big fights. We're very excited that we can have the pleasure to continue to promote him. This means that we will be there with him as he's going to celebrate all of these great achievements and victories."
If everything comes together as planned, Schaefer says the first fight of Khan's new deal will be a junior welterweight unification with WBC/WBO champion Timothy Bradley.
"I think that what Amir wants and what he is talking about and what he would like to see is the fight between himself and Timothy Bradley," Schaefer said.
If Khan defeats Bradley, he would walk away with three of the major sanctioning titles. The next move would be a possible full unification with the IBF belt holder, Zab Judah - or whoever holds the title at that moment. And once Khan unifies the titles at 140, he would then attempt to accompish the same exact thing at 147-pounds.
"The winner of that fight would then have three belts, and then, assuming that Amir wins that fight, then the idea would be that maybe moving on into the rest of the year, maybe in November or December, he would come back. You know, there is a fourth belt. So, maybe he could unify the title against whoever holds that fourth belt," Schaefer said.
"Right now, that's [IBF champion] Zab Judah, and that would be for the undisputed junior welterweight title. And then, after that, he could move to 147 pounds and start doing the same thing there."
