Kevin Cunningham, manager and trainer of WBC/IBF 140-pound champion Devon Alexander, had plenty to say in response to Freddie Roach's recent comments on BoxingScene.com. During an interview with BoxingScene's Lem Satterfield, Roach called Amir Khan the "best fighter" at junior welterweight. Roach made an extreme comment to cement his confidence in Khan's abilities, by stating that his fighter could beat Alexander, WBO champ Tim Bradley and Marcos Maidana - in the same night.
"Any one of those guys out there -- Maidana, Bradley, Alexander. I feel like Amir Khan could beat them all in one night," said Roach. "It doesn't really matter. They're not the best guys out there. Amir Khan is."
Cunningham sounds off, telling Roach to stop running from Alexander, Bradley and especially Maidana. If Khan is so good, then he should be running to defend his title against Maidana, says Cunningham.
"That's why he ducked all three of them, because he can beat them all in the same night. Maidana has been Khan's mandatory for a year now, and he's fighting 40-year-old men and lightweights. Golden Boy don't even want to think about putting in Devon or Bradley with none of their fighters. Freddie is full of sh*t as usual," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
"Khan should be fighting Maidana. Khan shouldn't be looking around at f**king lightweights, and all of these guys trying to find him an opponent who can't punch. If he's as good as Freddie Roach says he is, why isn't he fighting Maidana in December? Maidana is his mandatory and he's one of the top five 140-pounders in the division. He's your mandatory and a top five fighter in the division. Why isn't that a done deal?"
